From refugee to government minister, my story is proof that the United Kingdom rewards those who work hard and never give up.
I was born in Baghdad and fled Saddam Hussein’s regime as a child. My family arrived in Britain with nothing—no wealth, no connections, just hope and determination. I saw first-hand the power of hard work, education, and enterprise to transform lives. Britain gave me opportunities my parents could only dream of, and I’ve spent my career making sure others have the same chance to succeed.
Business and public service have shaped my journey. I co-founded YouGov, turning it into one of the world’s most respected polling companies. Then I entered politics—to serve, to lead, to make a difference. For 14 years, I proudly represented Stratford-on-Avon - home of Shakespeare - taking on major ministerial roles that shaped national policy, from business and education to energy and finance.
As Vaccine Minister, I led the United Kingdom's COVID-19 rollout—the fastest in the world. As Education Secretary, I championed opportunity for every child, ensuring that background never dictates success. As Chancellor, I steered the economy through crisis, focused on growth, stability, and unlocking Britain’s potential.
From refugee to government minister, my story is proof that the United Kingdom rewards those who work hard and never give up. I believe in aspiration, enterprise, and public service.
And I will keep fighting for a world that backs ambition, rewards effort, and offers opportunity for all.
