Stratford MP Nadhim Zahawi has welcomed news that the first Syrian refugee families will be arriving to settle in Stratford this week and next, with more to come in the future.
The Government, as part of its commitment to relocating the worst affected individuals of the Syrian Civil War, has pledged to resettle up to 20,000 refugees over the next five years. It has pledged to bring these refugees to the UK directly from the crisis zone so as to discourage people from taking the perilous journey across the Mediterranean.
Commenting, Mr Zahawi said:
“I am delighted to hear that Syrian refugee families will be moving into Stratford during the next fortnight and into the future. As a refugee myself, I know how welcoming this country is. This is why I am certain that the families will have no problems in establishing Stratford as their new home. I wish them all the very best in their new lives here and would be pleased to meet them in the near future”.
