Affordable Homes

As part of the efforts to increase housebuilding, particularly on brownfield land, the Government have today announced plans to directly commission affordable homes to be built on public land at 5 sites. This approach hasn't been taken since the Government of Margaret Thatcher.

The radical policy will also help smaller housing providers, and new entrants to the market, who are ready to build but lack the resources and access to land - currently the largest house builders provide 50% of supply.

It will be backed up by a new £1.2bn starter home fund to prepare brownfield sites for new homes. This will fast track the creation of at least 30,000 new starter homes and up to 30,000 market homes on 500 new sites by 2020. This is all part of the Governments plan to deliver the commitment to create 200,000 starter homes over the next 5 years.
