Over recent weeks, I have used every possible opportunity to condemn President Trump's immigration policy as divisive and totally morally objectionable. So many people of a similar background to my own (I am an Iraqi-born British citizen) are now facing discrimination in their efforts to travel to a country that is expressly built on the values of freedom and liberty.
A strong diplomatic relationship with our closest ally, the USA, is exactly what allowed our Foreign and Home Secretaries to rapidly secure the right of all British citizens to travel to to the USA after the President issued the order some weeks ago. Anything that would jeopardise these close relations would hamper our ability to call the President out when we think him to be at fault in order to encourage him towards a moderation of policy. This is why I have consistently argued for the extension of an invitation to President Trump to come to the UK for a State Visit.
