Tonight’s leaders' debate showed yet again why David Cameron is the right man to lead this country. He was clear in laying out our message that the choice is obvious at this election, either 5 more years of Gordon brown increasing the deficit, and crippling our country with massive debts or David Cameron transforming the country, getting the deficit and borrowing down by getting Britain working again.
What was no surprise was the number of times that Gordon Brown twisted figures or simply lied to make his government’s record seem better than it actually is.
Firstly Gordon Brown claimed that he will maintain and increase police spending every year, badgering David to match his spending commitments. In reality that shouldn’t be difficult as there are no spending rise commitments in the Labour Manifesto. Instead there is simply a pledge to maintain current police officer numbers not to increase spending or increase police number
Gordon Brown also said that “Police have to spend 80 per cent of their time now on the streets.” when in reality the Advertising Standards Agency recently ruled illegal a Home Office advertising campaign that claimed: “You can now expect your neighbourhood police to spend at least 80 per cent of their time on the beat in your area” because there was no evidence that this was actually happening.
In the area of policing, Gordon Brown also claimed that “The one thing I'm absolutely sure of, we have to maintain the number of police we have in this country.” yet police officer numbers are already being cut by Labour. Thirteen police forces have cut police officer numbers in the last five years already and a leaked report for the Home Office, co-written by Mark Rowley, the Chief Constable of Surrey, has raised the prospect of 28,000 police officers being replaced by civilian workers to save money.
Let’s not forget, probably the worst lie of all, that Brown claimed that it was a Conservative government that removed exit controls at the borders. In reality the last Conservative government stopped embarkation controls for EU citizens in 1994, something that was in line with our obligations as an EU member. But it was Labour, who in 1998, stopped them for people from the rest of the world, resulting in porous borders and a sizeable illegal population.
Nick Clegg was no better, arguing that their manifesto lays out £15 billion of savings when in reality it only identifies £10.7 billion. In fact, our own analysis of their spending plans show that because the numbers simply don’t add up, borrowing will actually go up by an eye-watering £900 million.
David Cameron was in reality, the only person on television tonight who told the truth and laid out his policies about how we will cut the deficit, and get britain working again.
